German sports broadcaster Sport1 has renewed its rights deal for the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL), Germany’s domestic basketball league, for a further two seasons, from 2012-13 to 2013-14.
Sport1 will broadcast a total of 50 games across its free-to-air and pay-television channels Sport1 and Sport1+ and live streaming will be available on the broadcaster’s website. Under the deal, 40 games must be shown free-to-air.
The deal includes regular-season games and playoffs, plus the BBL cup competition and an all-star game.
Sport1 fought off competition from pay-television broadcaster Sky Deutschland, commercial broadcaster ProSiebenSat.1, telco Deutsche Telekom, and pan-European sports broadcaster Eurosport, all of whom had been in talks with the league.
