Canadian pay-television broadcaster Rogers Sportsnet has acquired domestic rights to the IndyCar motor-racing series.
The rights include the main IndyCar series and the Indy Lights developmental series and will run for five years, from 2013 to 2017.
Sportsnet plans to show live coverage of the series on mobile and internet platforms as well as television.
The deal comprises a minimum of 16 races per season, including the showpiece Indianapolis 500 event. The coverage will be simulcast on French-language pay-television channel TVS Sports in Canada under a sublicensing agreement between the broadcaster and Sportsnet.
It is the first multi-year deal agreed by Sportsnet for the IndyCar series.
Navaid Mansuri, vice-president of finance and sports programming at Rogers Broadcasting, said: “This agreement bolsters Sportsnet’s diverse portfolio of premium sports assets, content and championship events, as well as furthers Rogers’ and Sportsnet’s commitment to investing in sports to drive future growth.”
