US sports broadcaster ESPN and pan-regional sub-Saharan Africa pay-television broadcaster MultiChoice have agreed a deal to provide customers of pay-television broadcaster DStv with some of ESPN’s sports programming.
The move comes after ESPN announced that it would cease broadcasting its channels in Africa, Europe and the Middle East from July 31.
The programmes, some of which were partially broadcast on ESPN, will now be available on pay-television broadcaster SuperSport. These will include golf’s US Open, the US Open tennis tournament and the Nascar motor-racing series.
MultiChoice said it is also in discussions with the relevant rights holders to acquire other sports programming previously shown on ESPN, including various football, basketball, baseball and American football rights.
