Romanian public-service broadcaster TVR is understood to be in advanced discussions with the Sportfive agency to acquire rights for the 2014 and 2016 Olympics.
The rights fee is understood to be lower than the €2 million ($2.6 million) which has been reported by some local media.
Claudiu Săftoiu, the broadcaster’s director general, confirmed that a budget of around €2 million had been set aside for coverage of the events. This includes costs on top of the rights fee such as commentary positions, staff accommodation, and security.
Sportfive is selling the rights for the 2014 and 2016 Olympics in 40 European territories under a deal with the International Olympic Committee.
