Pay-television broadcaster Gol TV has acquired domestic rights in Peru for matches featuring the most successful football club in the country, Universitario de Deportes.
The deal will run for at least one year, until the end of 2013, and is worth at least $3.6 million (€2.8 million), according to the El Popular sports news website.
Ayar López Cano, the club’s temporary administrator, said that the rights fee was double what the club had received previously from pay-television channel Movistar TV, owned by Telefónica.
However, Telefónica disputes claims that the Movistar TV deal has expired, and has said it will take legal action to defend its contract, which it claims should run until 2016.
The report added that Gol TV is also targeting the rights of Sporting Cristal, UTC de Cajamarca, Juan Aurich and Universidad San Martín – all clubs that play alongside Universitario in the country’s top league, the Copa Movistar Torneo Descentralizado.
Peruvian clubs sell their media rights individually.
