BSkyB adds GP2 and GP3 coverage to Formula 1 channel

UK pay-television broadcaster BSkyB acquired live rights for motor racing’s GP2 Series and GP3 Series, the first- and second-tier feeder series for Formula One, in a deal with Formula One Management, the commercial rights-holder for all three championships.

Sky will broadcast live coverage from both championships on its new Sky Sport F1 channel, which will be launched in March to coincide with the Formula One season. Sky acquired rights to the Formula One world championship last summer in a seven-year joint-deal, from 2012 to 2018, with public-service broadcaster the BBC.

Coverage of the GP2 Series will begin with the second round of the 2012 season in Malaysia, on March 25.

The first race of the Formula One season is in Melbourne, Australia, on March 18.

BSkyB told TV Sports Markets that the length of the deal had not yet been finalised.
