Deal to end TrueVisions’ Euro 2012 blackout imminent

Thai pay-television operator TrueVisions is expected to strike a deal today with rival pay-television broadcaster GMM Grammy to gain the right to show matches from the Uefa Euro 2012 football tournament.

The Bangkok Post said that, as part of the deal, TrueVisions would allow GMM Grammy to show games from the English Premier League next season. TrueVisions has the Premier League rights in Thailand from 2010-11 to 2012-13, while GMM Grammy is the Euro 2012 rights-holder in the country.

The first six games of Euro 2012 were not available on TrueVisions, but were available on free-to-air commercial channels 3, 5 and 9, which agreed sublicensing deals with GMM Grammy, according to the Wall Street Journal.

TrueVisions has come under pressure from its subscriber base of nearly two million homes and also the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission, Thailand’s media regulator, to agree a deal to carry Euro 2012 matches.

In March, TrueVisions said it wanted to bid alone for the next cycle of Premier League rights, from 2013-14 to 2015-16, but added that it could be open to sublicensing on rights to GMM Grammy.
