Telecommunications company O2 has acquired the broadcast rights for the next three seasons of the Uefa Champions League club football competition in the Czech Republic.
Using its O2 TV IPTV platform, O2 will show 130 matches per season from the 2015-16 to 2017-18 campaigns of the Champions League, including the semi-finals and final, with the exception of one game played on Tuesdays.
The deal comes as O2 continues work on developing its own dedicated sports channel. Over the past two months, O2 TV’s subscriber base has increased by 4,000 to 184,000, while its O2TV Go service has been downloaded 240,000 times.
David Duron, director of marketing for the household segment at O2, said: “We are bringing a whole new dimension to watching football as our subscribers will be able to select their preferred tie on each match day. All the Tuesday and Wednesday matches together with the final will thus create the broadest football offer on the market. We have chosen football to showcase all the excellent functions on offer with our O2 TV technology.”
