Danish commercial broadcaster TV2 has announced the launch of a new channel, which will coincide with an expansion of its agreement with the IMG agency for rights to Spain’s LaLiga and Italy’s Serie A.
The new channel, which is called TV2 Sport X, will launch in January 2020. From then, TV2 has expanded its LaLiga and Serie A agreement with IMG. Its LaLiga coverage will increase to three matches per match-week (including one ‘El Clásico’ match per season) and Serie A coverage to one match per match-week.
TV2’s current agreement, which only allows the broadcaster to show one match from either league per match-week, will continue up until the launch.
The commercial broadcaster has been targeting exclusive sports rights this year. Along with its initial agreement for LaLiga and Serie A, it has also picked up rights to tennis’ ATP Tour and Wimbledon.
The broadcaster has announced that along with its football and tennis rights, it will also broadcast a host of other properties on the channel, including its coverage of the NBA and International Biathlon Union events.
In the 2018-19 season, IMG exploited the rights in Denmark on its own OTT platform Strive, following unsuccessful attempts to secure a deal.
